Ammunition / weapons demilitarisation

The demilitarisation of ammunition remains a common challenge throughout the world. Since the end of the “cold war” and the downsizing of NATO forces and those of the Eastern block, large quantities of ammunition have become surplus to requirements. This coupled with illegal trafficking and the increasing use of ammunition by terrorists and armed local gangs in the large cities around the world influences almost everyone’s life wherever they may be living.

Many countries now put demilitarisation high on their list of priorities and as such are actively supporting the effort to rid the world of unwanted surplus and in some cases dangerous ammunition. However many countries lack the funding and in some cases the expertise to destroy this large stockpile of ammunition in an environmentally benign, efficient and safe manner.

Explosive and Ordnance Demilitarisations Solutions Ltd (EODS) has the expertise and experience to undertake such work, which requires them to work alongside Governments and Military institutions. The company has worked with Governments to assist in the reform of their armed forces and help in the demilitarisation of many different types of weapons and ammunition, which in turn brings them closer to NATO conformity.

Our team is able to provide permanent and mobile systems for the destruction of ammunition and weapons. Open Burning and Open Detonation (OBOD) techniques are also used to destroy the remnants of war and surplus stocks of ammunition that cannot be reverse engineered. The company team has destroyed large quantities of weapons and ammunition using all the techniques mentioned here.

There are currently millions of tons of ammunition around the world in the underdeveloped countries and in the western alliances that are earmarked for destruction. The methods of destruction vary but the outcome is the same, better global stability and security as well as better weapons and ammunition controls which will prevent accidental and criminal deaths. It is everyone’s hope that in the future this will lead to a reduction in terrorist and violent activities for future generations to come which ever country or nationality they belong too.

EODS supports this view and as such has collaborated with the South East Europe Small Arms Clearing House (SEESAC) in the production of the SALW guidelines and implements them when ever and wherever it can. The company was audited by SEESAC on behalf of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office a copy of which can be obtained on request.
